Alembic is an open source interchange file format developed primarily by Sony Pictures Imageworks and Lucasfilms that has been widely adopted across the industry since 2011. Alembic stores complex animated scenes into non-procedural baked geometry, storing the animated vertex positions and animated transforms that result from complex scenes with modifiers, physics simulations, cloth and so on.
